The Junction Arts Festival (JAF) is an annual multi-arts festival featuring playful, interactive and ambitious contemporary live performance, theatre, visual and media arts, literature, music and dance by leading local, national and international artists. JAF focuses on presenting participatory works that invite audiences to become active participants and collaborators, and site-specific performances and installations that transform the city.
Through new commissions, international artist residencies, artist research and development, workshops, site-specific public installations, performances, exhibitions, events, lectures, screenings, and children's programming, the Junction Arts Festival aims to present a rigourous and conceptually engaged program for the presentation of contemporary art. Co-presentations and co-commissions with national and international presenters support an international cultural exchange of ideas and new practices, and the development of participatory and site-specific work in Tasmania.
The Junction Arts Festival presents artists in all stages of their career and works in all stages of creation. JAF encourages artists to collaborate with each other and the local community, and aims to foster creative partnerships that last longer than a single project. JAF presents art in a welcoming environment to all communities that is accessible and mostly free to the public.
Junction Arts Festival was first presented as a one-off event annexed to the 2010 Regional Arts Australia National Conference, hosted and organised by Tasmanian Regional Arts. The five-day festival filled a niche in Tasmania, and with significant local and national support, it received three years developmental funding to secure its place as a key art organisation in Tasmania and Australia. Through 2012, the Junction Arts Festival will go through the process of incorporating as an independent arts organisation separating from its current parent body, Tasmanian Regional Arts.
