Hi all!
I have been running an A Cappella vocal quartet for the past year, developing arrangements of existing pieces from a range of musical styles (Beatles, Regina Spektor, Billy Joel, jazz standards, and even some musical theatre, plus many more). We have begun performing under the name-in-progress 'Poppies'.
We are now looking for strong vocalists with a passion for A Cappella to join a new/sister group with two of the current 'Poppies' to focus on creating and developing original pieces for four voices. There is also potential for cross-over into the existing group's performance opportunities as well as new opportunities created for the new group.
A bit about 'Poppies' - This is not your high school choir. While our musical range is very broad, we are focusing on developing modern pop/jazz/folk pieces that show off our musicality as well as creating interesting experiences for the audience. Look on YouTube for a group called 'Aluka' for a similar taste of some of the work we've been doing.
We rehearse weekly/fortnightly in Doncaster VIC, mostly on weeknights. We are currently looking at Wednesday evenings for rehearsals this year.
A successful candidate is one who:
* Has a pleasant and true singing voice,
* Is willing to maintain her voice through home practice
* Has musical experience and talent as a performer
* Is willing to contribute to the development of new pieces (experience not necessary, just interest!)
* Can commit to weekly/fortnightly rehearsals and has weekend availability for performance opportunities
* Is a team player and understands the sharing of performance/organisation roles within ensembles.
We are definitely looking for at least one soprano voice, with a wide range and rich sound (not trills/operatic - think more of a clean jazz tone with vibrato when needed).
The second role is currently open to all female vocal ranges - ideally, range flexibility is valued as it means that we are able to explore much more interesting harmony and arrangement options.
I will be gathering applications for the next week, with auditions being held a.s.a.p. If you have audio or video recordings of yourself singing, that would be very helpful, but in-person auditions will be necessary to determine blend, and in-group trials would follow.
